Chapter 5: The Origin Of Religions

📖 The book The Buddha Teaches Once MorePart 1The Mystery of OriginsChapter 5: The Origin Of Religions

Minh Nguyet: Venerable Buddha, there are many religions that guide sentient beings on the path of cultivation. May I ask, why did these religions come into existence, and which one should we follow to attain liberation?

Venerable Buddha

Buddha once said that there is no single method to attain Buddhahood—each individual can cultivate according to their own spiritual capacity. Remember, all religions are arranged by God; He permits their existence to guide different groups of people based on what is most suitable for their spiritual development.

🕉️ Buddhism

This was personally established by God Himself, who descended as Buddha Shakyamuni to create the religion and guide those whose spiritual nature aligns with Buddhist teachings.

✝️ Christianity

God entrusted His eldest son, Jesus Christ—who is also the seventh Ancient Buddha, Maitreya—to descend to the human world, establish the faith, and teach sentient beings.

☯️ Taoism

God assigned Dipamkara Ancient Buddha to incarnate as Laozi (Lao Tzu) to establish Taoism and lead sentient beings.

📜 Confucianism

God assigned Kṣitigarbha Ancient Buddha to incarnate as Confucius, founding Confucianism and educating humanity.

Even adversarial or conflicting religions exist by God’s arrangement, serving as a test for human intelligence and discernment.

🌏 The Unique Knowledge Within Each Religion

All religions are like the fingers of a hand—while they share commonalities, each holds unique elements. Every religion reveals a portion of universal truth; therefore, instead of creating division, one should study them collectively to understand the complete picture of the universe.

Buddhism

  • Buddhism reveals the six realms of reincarnation, where beings cycle through different lifetimes according to their karma.
  • Each lifetime is an opportunity to complete missing lessons, but it does not explicitly state who governs and arranges these lessons.

Christianity

  • Christianity reveals that this universe is governed by the Supreme Being—God, the Divine Father.

Protestantism

  • Protestantism proclaims the “Good News”, foretelling that Earth will one day become Paradise, and the Messiah will return.

Hoa Hao Buddhism

  • Hoa Hao Buddhism reveals the prophecy of The Dragon Flower Dharma Assembly, where Maitreya Buddha will reappear to guide and enlighten sentient beings.

🔍 The Common Thread Among Religions

Upon careful observation, we can recognize a common theme across multiple religions—the mention of the Seventh Ancient Buddha.

  • The Prophecy of Maitreya in Buddhism:

In Buddhism, it is foretold that during the Age of Declining Dharma, a Buddha will descend into the world to enlighten sentient beings. This prophecy refers to Maitreya Buddha, as mentioned in the Sūtra of the Extinction of the Dharma:

When Maitreya Buddha is about to manifest in the world as the next Buddha, all realms will experience complete peace. Toxic air will be dispelled, rainfall will be abundant and consistent, crops will flourish, and trees will grow tall and bountiful. The Sūtra of the Extinction of the Dharma
  • The Return of Maitreya in Caodaism: Caodaism also predicts the arrival of Maitreya Buddha, referring to the Third Universal Salvation—the final ferry that will rescue souls.
  • The Dragon Flower Assembly in Hoa Hao Buddhism: In Hoa Hao Buddhism, the Dragon Flower Dharma Assembly is mentioned, where Maitreya Buddha will preside over the spiritual awakening and judgment of beings.

🧩 The Importance of Integrating Religious Knowledge

Just as grasping an object requires the cooperation of all fingers on a hand, understanding the complete nature of the universe requires combining knowledge from multiple religions. Each tradition holds a piece of the greater truth, and by studying them collectively, one can gain a fuller understanding of divine arrangements.

Minh Nguyet: I humbly express my gratitude to You. Your teachings have made me realize that no single religion is supreme, for no religion alone can provide a complete understanding of the universe.

Conclusion
All religions were established by God to guide those who are spiritually aligned with them. However, no single religion holds the full knowledge of the universe.
To gain a comprehensive understanding of the cosmos, we must integrate and discern wisdom from multiple traditions—just as grasping an object requires the cooperation of all fingers, understanding the universe requires combining insights from different religions, rather than relying on just one.
