Need 3 "AA" batteries (not included here).
Initially when I put in battery, it didn't work for a few min. I massage it a little and then it started working. It is possible that 1) it has been without battery for too long and need several min to charge 2) the mat have been bent so the connection is not as good anymore.

Therefore it may or may not work after shipment.
