Sad irons, or solid irons, were heavy, cast-iron implements heated on a stove to smooth clothes, using the word "sad" to mean "solid" or "heavy" from Old English. Though used in ancient China, they became common in Europe and America from the 17th to the late 19th century, persisting into the early 1900s in rural areas without electricity this is a example of one of those irons from that era made by the Dover company from the 1900-1925 era.The Iron is a great collectors piece and is in great condition with little to no rust when disassembled on the inside. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me
