Wood Crucifix - Replica of 18th Century Reliquary Crucifix
Marquetry woodworking along edges, mother of pearl inlay of areas representing reliquaries, brass Christ figure. There are 14 of these round mother of pearl inlays on this crucifix although some are not easily visible under the Christ figure. Marked Jerusalem on back. Measures 3⅞" × 6¼". Age unknown, condition as in photos.
In the 18th Century similar crucifixes were used by people walking the Via Dolorosa, the traditional route through Jerusalem's Old City that marks the path Jesus took while carrying his cross to his crucifixion. It is marked by 14 Stations of the Cross. In the 18th century it was still possible to collect earth from each of the 14 stations and deposit the earth inside the reliquary compartments of the cross.
