In early spring, the bare stems are covered with deep pink cherry blossoms, attracting a variety of pollinators. The pollinated blossoms produce semi-sweet, 3/8-1/2 inch diameter fruits that ripen to a deep purple-red in mid to late spring and early summer. The cherries are sweet with a slight tartness when fully ripe. The fruits can be eaten fresh or made into jam or jelly.
Ideal for use as a specimen, in groups, or as a hedge in sunny landscapes or flowering gardens. Shrub Borders.
Scientific Name: Prunus jacquemontii, sometimes called Afghan cherry, Afghan bush cherry, Afghan dwarf cherry, or flowering almond (also known as Prunus triloba).
